Animated Aliens - TopTenMM Alien Movies

Updated: Nov 11, 2019

Live action special effects seem so intrinsic to the experience of watching Alien-themed movies that it is often difficult to see how the extra-terrestrial script can be served using animation. Fortunately, children can vouch for the super-sized attraction of a Monsters vs Aliens (2009). And there are many other worthy animated vehicles.

But if there were just a couple of such alien-themed animation works to single out, it would have to be The Iron Giant (1999) and WALL-E (2008). Written and directed by Brad Bird, The Iron Giant (based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes) tells the heart-warming story of a young boy who finds and befriends a gigantic but genial robot from outer space and they must battle paranoid government officials intent on destroying the alien.

Vin Diesel voiced the endearing Iron Giant. The music score came from Michael Kamen. A story with head and heart. This is an enchanting parable on the theme of "you are what you choose to be." Animation both simple and compelling.

Nine years after this release, another animated work came along that stole hearts and minds with its magical story told without the help of many words. A robotic trash compactor - Waste Allocation Load-Lifter (Earth Class), or WALL-E - is cleaning up on the wasteland that is earth after the humans have left. His undisturbed existence is then thrown completely out of joint with the arrival of a robotic probe, Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator or EVE. Their adventures trigger a reset for humanity that is decisive for their future.

Directed and co-written by Andrew Stanton, WALL-E won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe award for Best Animated Feature. Despite the obvious ingenuity of its animation and special effects, what stays though is an enchanting story peopled by endearing characters and intelligent social commentary that resonates powerfully across age groups.

The Iron Giant and WALL-E entertain and educate even as they remind all movie maniacs that alien themed movies that endure are those underpinned by a great story, characterisation and direction. Not just mind-boggling (or mind-numbing!) special effects.
