Hellraiser (1987) was written and directed by Clive Barker is a movie spanning just 93 mins and filmed with a budget of just $1 million. Grossing $14.6 million at the box office, it was extremely well received by audiences across the world. The film gained a score of 7 on IMDB and reviews from critics were, though rather mixed, in general more positive and appreciative; some even calling it the greatest horror film until then!

The movie’s plot is macabre, and far from the regular horror fare. Frank who solves a strange puzzle-box he picked up in Morocco, ends up unleashing strange beings from another dimension. They appear with hooked chains and tear him to pieces. But that’s just the prelude to Frank’s story. When his brother Larry moves into their old house with his wife Julia and accidentally cuts himself while moving furniture, his blood which drips down into the cellar triggers resurrects Frank; and he is thirsty for more now intent upon making a full come back. Julia, who had had an affair with him earlier (and not quite over him yet) discovers him in his semi-formed horrid state but sympathizes with him and promises to get him more blood.

A unique plot, a tight script, a tense score, and a truly macabre setting make this not just a great horror film but a trailblazer of sorts in the unique direction in which it took audiences.

Soon she is doing the rounds in bars and picking up men only to bring them home and murder them in cold blood so she can feed the monster. In a fast paced series of events, Larry is killed, Katie, their daughter encounters the strange beings from the other dimension and the unfolding drama reveals Pin-head (the infamous tortured sadomasochistic leader of their tribe) who says they are beings looking for carnal pleasure in new realms of existence and to whom pain and pleasure are not to be distinguished from each other.

They have come to seek Frank and take him back to their realm. And after Frank ruthlessly kills Julia for her blood he is dragged in by the beings from the other dimension. Katie escapes and discards the box. But like any real horror flick with the substance to carry on into sequels, the box finds a new owner and the movie closes leaving …well ..everything open for a new start!

A unique plot, a tight script, a tense score, and a truly macabre setting make this not just a great horror film but a trailblazer of sorts in the unique direction in which it took audiences.
