Jet Li and child star Miu Tse come together as a father-son duo with extraordinary martial arts prowess who battle betrayal, malice, and the formidable power of the tyrannical government as they defend the Shaolin temple, and their own freedom and safety.

Despite its 6.4 rating on IMDB, this film has mixed reviews. While it never made it to the top list of Jet Li’s films in any official listing, this is a hugely overlooked film which gained its reputation for being one of the most kick-ass martial art entertainers of all time.

Director Jing Wong and the famous Corey Yuen team up to create what is arguably one of the most engaging combination of fight sequences in recent decades.

Jet Li plays a former student of Shaolin, betrayed by his fellow student who later becomes his arch-rival and incredible opponent. Wounded and burnt, and now in a mysterious armoured vehicle of sorts, the villain strikes with ferocity and breath-taking style. Miu Tse plays Jet Li’s little son; he was just 10 years old when the film was released and was probably closer to 9 when it was filmed.

In terms of a storyline, it’s pretty straight forward; and involves Jet Li joining up with a few friends along his journey. His son and he remain the epicentre of the action and the emotional charm of the film. The additional characters include a mother and daughter duo as well as a rich clown interested in martial arts. The comedy is not unlike some of the other Chinese flicks, for instance, around the iconic character Wong Fei Hung, also featuring Jet Li….clumsy jokes and some of them at the wrong time and place, but in this movie they are somehow more acceptable and in line with the story.

Director Jing Wong and the famous Corey Yuen team up to create what is arguably one of the most engaging combination of fight sequences in recent decades.

Of course, what stands out most is the sheer brilliance of the action sequences and the never-seen-before level of fight choreography including an out of the world fight with the main villain on and around a staircase and near a giant clock tower. The props, the new age weapons, the stretch which the action achieves while still being believable make this truly one of the greats of all time!

Perhaps in no other film has the central Jet Li character been so serious, so alone, so forsaken and yet so full of conviction, courage and heroism. His calm persona, the unique style of fighting he employs, and the aura around the father-son duo make the movie all the more endearing, and true to character!
