Insidious (2010) is an outstanding supernatural horror film and it’s the first installment in the franchise. Written by Leigh Whannell and directed by James Wan, the film stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Barbara Hershey. The film, which scored a 6.8 score on IMDB, is focused on a married couple whose son enters in a comatose state that no one can explain.
Josh and Renai Lambert move into a new home with their sons Dalton and Foster, and baby daughter Cali. On the first night in the home, Dalton is drawn to the attic by something in the shadows and gets frightened. The next day, he doesn’t wake up. He’s in a coma and the doctors can’t find an explanation.
Time passes and Dalton is taken home. Soon after, paranormal things start happening. Renai hears voices at night and sees a man, Foster claims Dalton sleepwalks, and the security alarm is triggered for no reason at all. One day, Renai finds a bloody hand-print on Dalton’s bedding and she complains about the house, but Josh ignores her. That same night, Renai is attacked by the man she was seeing, and they decide to finally move. But the hauntings continue in the new house.
They finally decide to get help. So, enter demonologist Elise Rainier, along with her sidekicks Specs and Tucker. She immediately senses a presence in the house. She then explains Dalton is not in a coma, but mentally trapped in the astral plane. He was born with the ability to travel in his dreams, but he went too far, into a place called “The Further”. A place for lost, condemned souls. With his mind trapped there, his body is up for grabs.
After that, a séance is performed where the group is attacked by the demon. Then, Elise explains she has met Josh before, when he was 8 years old. It’s revealed he has the same ability as Dalton and a spirit had latched onto him, so she came to help. Elise tells them that the only way to rescue Dalton is for Josh to go into The Further and get him.
But is it really Josh who came back?
She puts him in a trance, and he goes there. He encounters the man who attacked Renai first and defeats him. Then, he finds the red demon’s lair, where Dalton is chained. Josh frees him but the demon finds them, and the spirits start invading the real world as well, attacking everyone at home. Right before escaping, Josh confronts the spirit who haunted him as a child and then both him and Dalton return to their bodies. But is it really Josh who came back?
James Wan excels as director, the cast do more than justice to their roles, the settings, the music and the air of gloom that pervades this unreal world we journey through make this not just a truly memorable horror flick, but surely one of the really respected masterpieces of the genre.
