Directed by Wilson Yip , the film scored a 7.5 on IMDB and was extremely well received not merely for its superb fight scenes and choreography but also for telling a powerful story about Chinese culture standing up to the invading western culture and dominance using the boxing contests as the canvas of this engaging narrative.
Donnie Yen reprises his role as the legendary Ip Man where he faces arch-rival Taylor “the Twister” Miller; an incredibly muscular tornado on two feet known to demolish his opponents with the sheer power of his blows and his overwhelming confidence. The prelude to these contests is Ip Man’s own struggles facing rival groups in Hong Kong and gaining the respect of the local martial arts fraternity with his remarkable skill, poise and fighting grace.
Even with all his success, his mastery, and his emerging fame Ip Man’s character, solid personal values and sheer goodness of heart shine through in this remarkable film!
A more than worthy opponent – Many martial arts films often position the hero against a fairly impressive and highly skilled rival. What adds to the movie’s plot is the towering strength, prowess and brutality of the rival boxer Ip Man is to face. Despite the extraordinary skill we have seen Ip Man display in the first movie and here again in this second film, the sheer power of the twister, and the way he levels the martial arts experts before Ip Man sows a lingering doubt in our minds about the real chance Ip Man has against this force of nature.
Character and values – Like the first part, this film also shows Ip Man the family man; the doting husband, and the mentor who advises his students to spend time with their families. Even with all his success, his mastery, and his emerging fame Ip Man’s character, solid personal values and sheer goodness of heart shine through in this remarkable film!
The incredible fight sequences – The Ip Man franchise delivers again in the masterful fight sequences. Power, grace and skill come together in every action sequence whether they are the challenges Ip Man deals with from his own Chinese rivals or the constantly escalating drama in the boxing fights with the Twister; the film promises a crescendo of absolutely stunning action and intensity for any die hard martial arts fan.
A worthy successor to the amazing first part, Ip Man 2 is surely right up there with the greatest martial arts films of all time!
